Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically composed of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop, which is mounted 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular court with a defined area that includes a three-point line and key area. Players advance the ball by dribbling or passing, and defensive teams attempt to prevent scoring by blocking shots and stealing the ball.

The game consists of four quarters, and the team with the most points at the end wins. Points are awarded for shots made from different distances: two points for field goals made inside the three-point line, three points for shots made beyond it, and one point for free throws. Basketball emphasizes skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and teamwork. It was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith and has since evolved into a highly popular and competitive sport played worldwide at various levels, including amateur, collegiate, and professional leagues.
